Marvel and Sony: Where's Spidey Going?
Hey guys! Yeah, it's been awhile again. I'm pretty sure you've all heard that Sony and Marvel have been discussing Spider-Man's studio future. They went into talks this week about Spider-Man appearing in 2016's Captain America Civil War, but the talks failed. In released hacked emails, if Sony were to reboot Spider-Man again, we'd have an adult Spider-Man. We've also heard from Marvel for what they'd do if Spider-Man was theirs again. Also If you haven't seen The Amazing Spider-Man 2, some spoilers will pop up...
1. Recast.
It seems that Andrew Garfield would be out as Spider-Man if Marvel was Spidey's cinematic superior. I disagree with this. Andrew Garfield has been the best live action Spidey and it'd suck to see him recast-ed.
2. Dropping the origin story.
If Marvel reboots, we won't be getting another origin story. We'll see teenage Peter Parker who is already Spider-Man, tackling the issues of his double life. I agree with this, we can't keep milking the origin story every time there's a reboot. If Marvel takes Spidey back, I'd say go right ahead with that
3. Focusing less on romance, more on Spidey.
Marvel decided to that romance with Spider-Man has been "done to death" like the origin story, and while not completely getting rid of it, they'd focus less on Peter Parker's love life, and more on Spidey. I'm all for this too. I'd do want to see more Spidey than Peter Parker worrying about his relationships. Go right ahead Marvel.
4. Cancelling all of Sony's Spider-Man spin-off's.
If Marvel reboots, all of Sony's proposed Spider-Man spin-offs would be cancelled. That includes the Sinister Six film, the female lead film, and an Aunt May spin-off (c'mon Sony, I don't think anyone would've wanted to see that). I would've wanted to see Sinister Six, and I maybe I would give the female lead spin-off a shot, but not the Aunt May film. I'd say for a Marvel reboot, include the Sinister Six in maybe a second or third film if they get Spidey back
5. New Director! (Of Course. Also this one is more for Sony)
Marc Webb already decied that he wasn't going to direct TASM3, and all Spider-Man fans are already done with Marc Webb's direction. Hackers released several emails from Sony to the public about if Spidey stayed with them, and they had a list of possible people to direct. On that list, I would really want to see Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 and 22 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, etc.) to direct a Spider-Man film. That would awesome (but for a Marvel/Disney Spidey film).
Marvel's got some pretty kick-ass ideas for a Spider-Man reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This would be film that would make Marvel fans and probably non Marvel fans happy. Plus we'd finally get to see Spidey in the MCU. But still there is a few things I'd want to see in a MCU Spidey film and appearances.
1. PLEASE KEEP THE TASM CAST!
This seems unlikely because it seems that Marvel and Sony doesn't want Andrew Garfield to don the Spider-Man suit again, BUT, Andrew Garfield's portrayal of the web slinger has been on of the positives of the TASM films, and like I said earlier, he's been the best actor to don the Spidey suit on camera. Since Marvel wants to focus on Peter Parker still being a teenager, I thought Andrew Garfield made a teenage Peter Parker work very well in TASM, he could still do that in a MCU Spidey film. As for Gwen Stacy, since this would be a completely separate universe, Gwen could still be alive and interacting with Peter, and Emma Stone was a fantastic Gwen.
2. More Unused Spidey villains!
One of the things I liked about TASM films was that they started to use villains that haven't been used in Spidey films yet. We still have a bunch of Spidey villains that haven't been seen on the big screen yet like The Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, The Chameleon, The Rhino (Yeah, I know he made a cameo at the end of TASM2, but they could expand in a MCU Spidey film), The Enforcers, etc. I would want to see Marvel continue that in an MCU Spidey film.
3. Mary Jane Watson?
Shailene Woodley was originally going to appear in TASM2 as Mary Jane but her part was cut from the film. And she recently stated that she still wants to be in Marvel film (even though she state anything about being in a Spidey film again). She could still probably play Mary Jane in a MCU Spidey film, and she and Gwen don't even have to major characters since Marvel wants to focus more on Spidey than Peter Parker's girlfriends.
4. J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle
In TASM2 we saw an email conversation between Peter and J. Jonah Jameson about Spider-Man. J.K. Simmons said he'd be open to reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson in a TASM film, we could certainly do that in an MCU Spidey film. They could also include Peter Parker's job at the Daily Bugle in an MCU Spidey film. I'd really want to see a scene where it's Andrew Garfield and J.K. Simmons arguing face to face about Spidey.
5. The return of Sam Raimi?
I'd be open to Sam Raimi returning as a producer for an MCU Spidey film, since he'd be working with Marvel/Disney and not Sony. But in a hacked Sony email, Sony would've wanted Raimi to return to either produce or direct TASM3. I don't think Raimi would be eager to go back to work for Sony since Spider-Man 3 was a disaster. Like I said earlier, I would want Raimi to return for an MCU Spidey film.
Marvel and Sony are to meet again in January about Spidey's cinematic future. Let's hope Marvel can get back Spidey, use their ideas, see old characters and unused Spidey villains, and we can keep Andrew Garfield and the rest of TASM cast for a MCU Spidey film.
